Academy of Natural Sciences Flag Carried by Lonnie Dupre to the North Pole

Scope and Contents

In 2009, Lonnie Dupre led a team of explorers on a fifty-four day trek across the ice to the North Pole, following the footsteps of explorer, Robert Peary one hundred years earlier. This trip commemorated one of the most famous early polar expeditions and raised awareness of the effects of global warming. To mark the Academy of Natural Sciences' early support of Peary's explorations, Dupre planted the Academy flag at the Pole.

Scope and Contents This plaster cast is the original plaster model for the obverse of the Academy of Natural Sciences Gold Medal for Distinction in Natural History Art. The medal was originally designed by David Bonner and Donald Patterson of the Franklin Mint. The original plaster for the reverse of the medal was never returned to the Academy by the Franklin Mint. Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia Papers on Expeditions

Scope and Contents This collection was assembled by Library and Archives staff from various accessions of records transferred from Academy departments and offices. Academy of Natural Sciences Printing Blocks and Plates

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of single and group printing blocks and plates commissioned for use by the Academy of Natural Sciences. The plates and blocks range from animal figures, signature plates, letterhead, to special invitations. The printing blocks are made of wood with metal outlines fastened to the wood. There are solid metal printing plates and also metal roller printing plates. Each block or plate has a general note attached to it with more detail.

African Batiks

Scope and Contents

This collection contains two seperate African animal Batiks. One of the batiks has a redish hue and the other blue. Batiks refer to a cloth that traditionally uses a manual wax-resist dyeing technique. In October of 2009, UNESCO designated that Batiks are a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. A label accompanies the batiks that read: African Animal Batiks colored dyes on cotton, 1970, Gift of Mrs. Thomas Raeburn White.

African Rhinoceros with Tick Birds Sculpture

Scope and Contents

This is a plaster cast of the African Rhinoceros with Tick Birds sculpture created by James Lippitt Clark. Clark was known for his excellent sculptor work with African animals and sculpted many Rhinos in his lifetime. This Black Rhino statue stands thirty inches tall and forty inches wide. It was created in 1912 and said to be on of Clark's best works.
